  • To communicate with assigned residents on each shift attended and offer help with tasks. These tasks could be personal shopping, letter writing and reading, arranging appointments or assisting with recreational pursuits.
  • To offer the residents assistance with other personal affairs such as contacting relatives.
  • To be a companion to the resident – someone the resident feels he/she can talk to about any issue, confident in the knowledge that the discussion will not be repeated to anyone else unless that is what the resident wishes.
  • To help the resident within reason – for example, obtaining shopping for the resident when convenient but that does not mean being expected to go out immediately to make purchases.
  • To voice residents’ concerns regarding issues connected with the running of the home – for example a change in policy or practice which the resident was not happy with.
  • To record in the new key worker file, the duties that the key worker has completed for the resident.
  • The key worker must have their sections in the file signed by either their assigned resident or a senior carer at the end of each month.
  • The key worker has a responsibility to advise the senior carer or the owners of the home if a concern is identified involving the physical, psychological or emotional well being of the resident. However, this must be accomplished, within the confines of National Care Standards Act paying particular attention to a residents’ right to privacy and confidentiality.
